Online Store Standards | Remove the Chaos

Online Store Standards and creative web design is a term overlooked in todays design world. Too often the emphasis is on churning out the same images and textual content to get an average looking website. There is more to creating the right look you think your business needs. Instead the focus should be on how you want to make your customers feel, when they enter your website. If you ran a high street store would you leave wet cloths on the counter or mops strewn over the floor? The answer is no. Just as owning a physical presence in a high street store, the same applies to selling your products or services online.

Good HousekeepingOnline Store Tips

True there aren’t cloths or mops in an online store or website but there is the crucial attention to detail which is required. In this article, I will focus on the user experience, to improve online store standards.

The user experience begins at your front door; in online terms this is your snippet or Meta title and description. This is the link a customer would find while browsing in a search engine. The description should be representative of what you offer and with a title that clearly defines your business.

But wait…your door is really creaky, difficult to open and the handle are covered in jam. Not a good first impression for any customer. Of course I am talking about the time that your front page loads onto your customers browser. So while wiping the jam from their hands distracts the customer your front page is still loading. So far not a good experience and that’s before any browsing of any kind is done.   The business should have a spotless front door, which glides open and is free from 3rd party sticky materials on the handle.

Built for Speed | Online Store Standards

Server response time is absolutely crucial, your front page and indeed all your pages should load quickly. Google’s latest research cites that the average mobile landing page takes 22 seconds to load; further research confirms that 53% of people will leave if it takes longer than 3 seconds. So before customers even get through your front door, they are leaving…more than half of them.

So what can you do, to improve online store standards?Online Store Standards

Ask the right questions when you are getting a website or online store created and make sure that your front door is beautiful, clean and glides open to reveal your business.

First impressions count, make sure that your business is ready for e-clients.

Make sure it is tested thoroughly and check the results for yourself.  It’s your business and making sure the details are taken care of will make sure that customers are prepared to come through your door and browse your products or services.

Mobile Friendly Website | Mobile versus Desktop | Why Mobile Is Needed

Mobile Friendly

Why a Mobile Friendly Website?

In 2014 an interesting thing occurred. Mobile devices, smartphones & tablets use have overtaken traditional desktop and laptop computers, and since then have progressively increased the gap. This is not just in the UK but across the world, the trend for browsing the web on a mobile device is ever increasing. Why not? The technology is increasing, the quality of screens and investment from manufacturers into the sonic quality of these mobile devices is phenomenal. Couple this with the easy accessibility, no more waiting for 10 mins while your desktop boots up to find that latest gadget, ebook or download. Just swipe your phone and in a few seconds your task is done…enter the mobile friendly website.

So when you have a business with an outdated website…a non responsive product. Any potential customers will just click off and look for one they can actually browse, read and find the contact details with ease.

Mobile-Friendly | Enter Google

At the beginning of 2016, Google began tagging websites which were ‘mobile-friendly’. This was in preparation for the release of a Google Update in May 2016, which changed the algorithm and now promotes mobile-friendly websites in  search results, which indirectly penalises any website which is outdated, unresponsive and non mobile friendly. This is bad if your business hasn’t yet updated.

User Experience

The website should be all about a positive user experience, not a series of squinting, zooming and scrolling. Browsing should be effortless, if it is effortless this translates into sales and a positive experience when promoting your brand.

Not Sure Yet?

Look at your website on your smartphone and ask yourself if this is how you want customers to view you? The investment on your digital marketing will pay dividends and aid business growth. Can you afford to stay behind?

Website Speed | What Is Acceptable? | How Slow Is Slow?

Website Speed

What is Website Speed?

Website speed essentially refers to the speed with which Web pages or media content is downloaded from website hosting servers and displayed onto the requesting Web browser. Page load time is the duration between clicking the link and displaying the entire content from the web page on the requesting browser.

There are three core aspects necessary to understand page speed in context of user experience and website performance:

  • The view of time taken in delivering the requested material along with the accompanying HTML content to the browser
  • Browser response to page load requests
  • The view of end-users as the requested web page renders on the browser. This is the ultimate measure of page load speed.

Website performance subsequently impacts on search engine rankings developed under proprietary and undisclosed algorithms. Incorporating key factors including page speed, user experience, website responsiveness and a whole lot of other website performance metrics.

The absolute critical principle in maximising website performance is to focus on page speed optimisation from the initial stages of design. Plugins, server side scripts and final tweaks all impact on page speed and load times. Yet many Web developers tend to overlook page load times in their website development and design strategies.  Some of the biggest household names have overlooked this crucial element.

How Slow is Slow?

Any page which loads slower than the blink of an eye, which is approximately 400 milliseconds. Yep that’s right…Google have discovered that the barely perceptible page load time of 0.4 seconds is long enough to cause users to search less.

Online businesses have all the resources they need to deliver content instantaneously. To leverage and complement these resources, business need speed optimised websites that deliver the best user experience.

What Happens When They Don’t?

1 in 4 visitors would abandon the website if your website speed online, takes more than 4 seconds to load. While 46 percent of users will not revisit poorly performing websites. Website owners have a mere 5 seconds to engage visitors before they consider leaving, while 74 percent of users accessing the mobile site would leave if it takes longer than 5 seconds to load. Every one-second delay in page load time could lead to $1.6 billion in annual losses for online merchants as big as Amazon.

47 percent of ecommerce customers expect page load times of less than two seconds before they consider leaving and 40 percent of users would abandon the site at the third second of waiting, before a performance analytics tool even captures their presence on the site.

Acceptable Website Performance

So what is the neuroscience and acceptable rhythm acceptable by users of websites? It is 100 milliseconds. That’s how long it takes the Occipital lobe in our brain stores visual information as Sensory memory.

Google researchers suggest page load times of less than 100 milliseconds give visitors the illusion of instantaneous website response as the visual Sensory memory processor in our brain works in bursts of 100 milliseconds. The memory store clears itself after o.1 seconds as photoreceptor cells in the eyes transmit more information to the Occipital lobe.

1 second of page load time does suffice in maintaining seamless flow of though, users feel in control of their Web browsing activities. The mental stress is not aggravated unless the website fails to respond as desired.

At 10 seconds of delay, visitor attention is barely kept. The sensation of impatience, frustration and feeling of abandonment is usually strong enough to keep visitors from revisiting such slow websites again.

The Psychological Conundrum

Abandoning a website due to a slow page. Is not always the quickest path to access the desired information on the Web. An average user would spend several extra minutes browsing fast-responding but irrelevant websites. Instead of waiting a few more seconds for sluggish relevant websites to respond.

Considering the vast library of resources on the Web. Users will eventually find the required information on another website. The eventual losers in this, are online businesses unable to deliver their message fast enough to hold a users interest.

Cold Kills iPhone

Cold Kills iPhone

Cold Kills iPhone | Shortened Battery Life

Cold Kills iPhone! So it’s winter and you’ve left the house and on your travels, you leave your iPhone in the car because you have a meeting or no need for the device for the next few hours.  On your return you pick up your phone to check your emails, texts or missed calls but alas the phone is dead with not a single drop of charge…how frustrating is that? You question why you chose an iPhone…has someone been on a Candy Crush marathon while you were in your meeting? Did you actually have a full charge…the doubt sets in…

Why This Happens

Yes you did charge your phone fully but the problem is the Lithium Ion (Li-ion) battery which powers your treasured device, has a flaw. Although the design of these batteries ensure relatively quick charging, the downside is introduce sub-zero temperatures and the charge slips away faster than your monthly salary a week before Christmas.

How to prevent

Well if you venture out on the coldest days of the year…or if you’re in Scotland that’s most of the year, you would put a jacket on or something to keep you warm.  The same applies to your iPhone keep it warm, put it in a case or stuff it in a sock or keep it in your pocket, that way the charge will remain as will you the stability of any frustration levels and the urge to drive over your dead device.
